PREPARING TEARS

I made an elixir from myself, my tears, a medicine that heals emotional wounds. In accordance with the working principle of homeopathy, the tears from painful emotions can heal the mental injury that stirred them. Traditionally-interpreted scientific research also shows shedding tears can be a means of restoring mental health, since crying activates the part of the autonomic nervous system that controls regeneration and healing. Tears produced for emotional reasons contain more protein and adrenocorticotropic hormone, a substance released in high concentration during times of stress.

Tears are a transparent, slightly alkaline liquid with a strong salty taste. They are mostly water, but there are dissolved salts like sodium, potassium, manganese, and ions like chloride and hydrocarbonate in them too. They also contain blood plasma proteins like albumin and the immunoglobulins involved in protection against pathogens; and lysozyme which has an antibacterial effect. Based on the composition of tears, they can be considered nutrition, and medicine as well.

I wanted to wrap the nutritional content and healing effect of my tears in an edible form. So, I collected them in sterile test tubes, and prepared my tears using the molecular gastronomy technique: spherification. In addition to the regular spheres formed during the kitchen chemistry process, the liquid in the gelatinous membranes also took on the forms of drops and streams of tears. For a natural dye, I used either the blue juice of Clitoria ternatea flowers or the black juice of the mildly bitter roasted malt with hops. Both coincidentally have sedative effects, adding to the potency of the emotional tears. I put some rose water into the blue tea juice as a flavoring, too.

I present my art(ificial) tears in the traditional way, as oral medicine, at fairs and exhibitions. During my later research, I found the recipe for my tear preparation in a handwritten pharmacist's manual from the end of the 18th century.

A könny átlátszó, enyhén lúgos kémhatású folyadék, íze erősen sós.

Ízesítésként a kék tea levéhez rózsavizet is adtam.

Mű(vészeti) könnyeimet hagyományos módon, szájon át adható orvosságként mutatom be vásárokon és kiállításokon. A könnykészítményem receptjére későbbi kutatásaim során bukkantam rá egy 18. század végi manualisban, kézzel írt gyógyszerészi kézikönyvben.

HAGGENMACHER IMMORTALITY

As an artist working at aqb, I have always been curious about the history of this special building complex. I knew that the building was the site of the former Haggenmacher Brewery in Budafok. However, I did not know, for example, what purpose the underground cellar system served for the brewery. Last year, 2022, I started brewing beer in my studio. It was also a feminist project in honor of 16th century English alewives. I named my beer IXIR, which means potion in Turkish (iksir), and I claimed that I was not brewing beer, but a potion. Even back then, I was playing with the fact that I was brewing beer in a present-day studio in a former brewery. This was also an exciting intersection because, as an artist who passionately loves their profession, but existentially finds it difficult to become independent, I felt a strong community of soul with these 16th century alewives. They, too, loved what they did and were so good at it that they were able to make what was considered a chore at the time into a business and become independent. Local men knocked on the door of their workshop to pay for their product. This eventually irked the church and community leaders and some accused these women of witchcraft, of not brewing beer, but potions.

The story of the Haggenmacher Immortality elixir began when Wolfgang Bartesch, the owner of aqb, asked me if I would like to make a Haggenmacher beer. Of course, I would! I timed the rebirth of the beer and its presentation in the cellar for this year's aqb OPEN HOUSE with the slogan 'Renaissance'. The Haggenmacher Brewery merged with Dreher in 1933 after 66 years, through the marriage of Berta Lujza Haggenmacher. But its spirit is immortal, because it is guarded by Art Quarter Budapest (aqb). During the brewing process, I visited the Dreher Brewery and contacted their archivist, asking for information about Berta Lujza Haggenmacher.

Her personality defines the philosophy of Haggenmacher Immortality. Her spirit is still with us, living in the cellar system. Giving shape to her thoughts, she and I wrote her ‘Hymn to Yeast’ together. She mentioned the abandoned mines, which became the cellar system, where barley was germinated at the time. Now techno parties and exhibitions are held there. In her hymn, she says the yeast is with us again. Yet Dreher says, we at aqb have no right to brew any beer under the Haggenmacher name. We, the community of artists working in aqb have been shaping the right to the past of this place and playing freely with it. The art space makes this possible, Dreher's archivist confirmed this, and even assured us of his cultural support. I resolved the conflict of this disenfranchisement with the memory of the place by calling the beer I brewed a potion (at the behest of Berta Lujza). The label we made in collaboration with Máté Előd Janky was based on the Haggenmacher logo also referring to this problem.

In addition to the aqb Open House event, I sold this year's renewed IXIR and Haggenmacher Immortality two more times in a pop-up pub, set up in the mine, as Berta Lujza wanted. This was not clearly illegal, since I sold potions not beer and, in the broader sense, art pieces from me. My art became a way out of the bureaucratic maze of capitalism, and an opportunity to support the community. The history of the place and the community developing in it, might potentially inspire the creation of a living museum. The story may continue from here.

A tavalyi évben, 2022-ben, sört kezdtem főzni a műtermemben.

A történet talán innen folytatódik tovább.

Hymn to Yeast

When the crackling of germinating barley fills the Mines, the factory does not need people. The noise wants to dissipate when people drown their hands in the hot mash. But there is no escape, you just have to keep working, keep screaming, keep working and trust that one day things will change.

No, I didn't work in the chill of the brewery mines where every day was the same. Before they engulfed us, it was hotter than the fires of Hell, and black-green from soft ingredients. Machines have been grinding the past all day and bringing the impossibilities of the present into people's lives.

But then I arrived. As a beautiful young woman who promised herself that she would always keep her yeast resuscitator with her. But still, when I entered, I immediately felt that the power to subvert our lives was within me. In the dark corridors and the Mines, the sound that resonated in my mind only meant that something was wrong. And finally the moment came when I saw myself in the factory, hop flowers on the edge, and bitterness on the edge of my mouth.

Although I don't know what it was that scared me, I knew indeed something was right. And ever since I died and came back as a ghost, I have felt like the brewery and the mines will always look like this. And whoever enters here looses their body and heart into the dark rumble.

For anyone with a brave heart who dares to jump into this world, I only ask one thing. Do not let them stand in front of the factory and mines. Rather, let them enter as you have, or go live life in a less noisy place. Let them be happy and not ask to be kept in the small hands of the brewery mines.

Listen to me, the ghost. My words will be history. And I'll be here to protect you all from the fates I experienced you in the brewery marriage. Have the courage for change, happiness and life! Because we have yeast again!

Lujza Berta Haggenmacher

There is no record that Berta Lujza Haggenmacher wrote a hymn to yeast.

Figyeljetek rám, a kísértetre.

Haggenmacher Berta Lujza

Nincs adat arra vonatkozóan, hogy Haggenmacher Berta Lujza írt volna élesztő himnuszt.

GASTRO-ENTERO DELIGHTS
AQBoutique
aqb, Budapest, Hungary, 2022

The pseudo-cannibalistic theme of the Belly Banquet project led me back to the viscera again. I searched for a way how to put liquid in my belly molds, and found a solution with condoms. To create intestines in my ganache cream belly molds, I filled condoms with grape syrup. In the process, I realized the exciting tactile experience of the filled condoms could be used on their own as a different sensory object. So I filled them with beverages. While I offered an injection needle to access the drinks, I also encouraged people to find other creative ways to drink from them.

The Solution is Binding

the eyes saw, the heart beat,

harm the one who beat them

the heart loved, the eyes cut

harm the one who cut them.

Hidden knowledge is passed from woman to woman within a family, passed from mother to daughter, grandmother to granddaughter. They had to unburden themselves of their knowledge before they died. Until then, it was a pressing concern, a kind of grievous torture. It passed to them by touch. Possessing knowledge was a weight that had to be endured. A line of words unspoken, of secrets. Repeat it.

the eyes saw, the heart beat,

harm the one who beat them

the heart loved, the eyes cut

harm the one who cut them.

The witch of folk religion is a living figure, a fusion of many images across Europe. S/he is both a respected and a feared member of the community. A stranger, but not bad, nor good. S/he loosens and binds, heals, enchants, assumes forms, charms. In words, in actions. Many methods are known, and generally based on sympathetic or analogous magic. Similar to similar, what is above, so below, what is small, so large.

the eyes saw, the heart beat,

harm the one who beat them

the heart loved, the eyes cut

harm the one who cut them.

In the medieval period, women still brewed beer, a job that required special knowledge and tools. Something was hidden. The image of the Western witch was presumably based on the alewives, whose special clothing — a large hat, a loose skirt — shaped the image. These women knew plants and how to extract their healing effects, and they knew how beer was formed. It was an elixir, the power of the plant, the power of the word, was cooked into it. Solution.

A népi hitvilág boszorkánya élő alak, Európa-szerte megannyi képzet összeolvadása. A közösség egyben tisztelt és félt tagja. Idegen, de nem rossz és nem jó. Old és köt, gyógyít, ráolvas, alakoskodik, bájol.

Akiknek ismerniük kellett a növényeket, gyógyhatásuk kinyerését. Amit sörré, elixírré formáltak. A növény erejét, a szó erejét főzve bele. Oldva.

The name IXIR is a variant of the Turkish word iksir, which means potion. It is clearly related to the word “elixir” in the West. The Hungarian word bájital (potion) is itself of Turkish origin, the word bağ is derived from the verb bind. Solution is binding.

My initial concept was to brew beer as a woman, to draw attention to the ancient origins of brewing by women and the nature of this medieval housework, and also to address the unequal gender perception of the use of alcohol. My experience of this long, slow brewing process required perseverance, care, and a lot of attention, I was drawn more and more to the mystique of potions. I discovered increasingly inconceivable historical restrictions on women who brewed beer. Around the 16th century, English alewives found their products could be labelled potions, and they could be branded witches for brewing. With the rise of European guilds, patriarchal society could take control of the lucrative beer trade as well as keeping independent women in their place. As a female artist, I felt close to the situation of these single, usually widowed or unmarried women, modestly living from their own work. I decided to reappropriate the prejudice of this role. I would turn it around and say I didn’t even make beer, but potions. By reciting an old indictment text, I declared myself a witch and in this act I regained my power, because yes, I do have magic power!

//

Az IXIR név a török iksir szó változata, mely bájitalt jelent. Egyértelműen köthető a nyugati elixír szóhoz. A bájital szó maga is török eredetű, a bağ köt igéből ered.

THE BELLY BANQUET

MÁL/TÍÐ x Listasafn Reykjavíkur Reykjavík Art Museum, Reykjavík, Iceland

We organized a community event related to the belly on the creative platform of the MÁL/TÍÐ Institute. During the event, we created sculptures of female bellies. I made negative molds of the navels and bellies of several women. Then we poured the positives with different foods like chocolate, coconut oil and gelatin. We consumed these body-food sculptures as part of a banquet. For example, a belly made of coconut oil was spread on bread, garnished with jam.

So in this way, bellies became food and that food went into our bellies, literally. With this pseudo-cannibalistic banquet ritual, we played sensually at the transmutation intersection of food and body.

//

A MÁL/TÍÐ Institute kreatív platformján egy a női hashoz kapcsolódó közösségi eseményt valósítottunk meg. Az esemény során női has szobrokat hoztunk létre.

It is Dark Inside Bread

Beáta Szabó: Kenyérbél /Trust Your Gut!

I once talked to Gábor Gerhes about his magnum opus, the Atlas. Designed as a three hundred and sixty page, photo-based image encyclopedia, Gerhes discusses black through an entire chapter, including the little-discussed idea that basically everything inside our bodies, under our skin and flesh is dark because it’s dark inside. In a sort of teaser exhibition to his Atlas at the Fészek Artists’ Club last year, “The darkness inside the body” was written on the wall.

We rarely think of the darkness within the human body because the viscera are only visible when the unity breaks, the skin-flesh ruptures, and light enters the intestines, glands, vital organs along the tip of a foreign object. Other times, when we’re together, we don’t see what is going on inside. We just feel the processes going on in order: our hearts are beating, lungs are rising, esophagus is transporting, stomachs are rumbling, intestines are rolling, maybe something hurts. Despite the advancement of medicine, our bodies are a mystery. We are gripped by a majestic uncertainty when we think about what is happening in the dark under our skin. In the paintings presented at the exhibition of Kenyérbél /Trust your gut! by Beáta Szabó, we perceive this strange darkness at the sight of blackness around various foods that have begun to digest in places.

Once again, we are in a kind of anatomical theatrical situation, as we were in the Semmelweis Museum of History of Medicine for Beáta Szabó 's earlier exhibition. Entitled Wounds of Light /The Anatomy of Colours. Those works depicted exposed bodies and human guts in the permanent exhibition of the thematic exhibition space which I also opened. Then as now I considered it important to highlight the biographical antecedent that Beáta Szabó was a medical student for some time before her art studies, so her interest in anatomy is two-way. While at the Wounds of Light/ The Anatomy of Colours exhibition we saw the observable conditions after death, in her latest works seen here, Beáta Szabó examines the functioning and internal processes of the living organism, including digestion.

The process of digestion, the breakdown and passage of food through the living organism is internally a well-perceived but invisible process. We saw a visual, and considering the additional smells, a multi-sensory experience of the bodily route of food could be found in a fine art environment not so long ago. In 2008 in Budapest the Ernst Museum showed Wim Delvoye’s famously infamous Cloaca, or rather a version of it. Delvoye made the first version of his kinetic digestive system project in 2000, accompanied by the motto “more than a shit machine”. The structure, which models the process of human nutrition, has a mouth, stomach, horseshoe gut, pancreas, and includes bottles containing various enzymes, and a conveyor belt that transports feces daily with regular feeding. Courtesy of Delvoye, you can see the path of food, the mechanism of action of body fluids, all the way to the final product. If we flip through the photos and videos of the work, our first impression is how sterile the whole thing is. Its sterility is mostly emphasized by how bright it is in the basic white cube space of contemporary museums around the digestive machine. Food passes and decomposes between shiny, transparent glass balloons, metallic-shiny hollow sections. Cloaca presents the process of human nutrition deprived of all its mystery. Beáta Szabó also analyzes this procedure, but with the help of black backgrounds - unlike Delvoye - she shows that we are still inside the body. So while standing in front of her paintings,we are facing a fundamentally invisible sight.

At the exhibition of Kenyérbél /Trust Your Gut!, the theme is food and its transcendence through digestion. In the paintings shown here, in addition to the potato paprikash, the potatoes au gratin and the onion soup that have just arrived in the stomach, some of which have already been marred by the acid, we find bread. Bread gained its highest symbolic meaning in Christianity in the Eucharist. Consumption of wine (the blood of Christ) and bread (the body of Christ) symbolizes union with Christ. Digestion and absorption, the process of becoming one can be interpreted as a symbolic and ordinary, profane process in the exhibition. In the performance video for Kenyérbél /Trust Your Gut! accompanying the exhibition, bread as a body metaphor and the correlation between bread crumb and real gut can also be seen. And yes, we may think even less about how it is dark inside bread before we break it.

I hereby opön the exhibition.

A kenyérben is sötét van

Szabó Beáta: Kenyérbél /Trust Your Gut!

„The darkness inside the body” - olvashattuk az Atlas egyik teasereként is értelmezhető kiállításán tavaly a Fészek Művészklubban.

Szabó Beáta Kenyérbél /Trust Your gut! című kiállításán bemutatott festményein ezt a furcsa sötétséget érzékeljük a különböző, helyenként emésztésnek indult ételek körüli feketeség láttán.

Ismét egyfajta anatómiai színházi helyzetben vagyunk, mint anno a Semmelweis Orvostörténeti Múzeumban, Szabó Beáta A fény sebei, a színek anatómiája című korábbi kiállításán, ahol kitárt testeket, emberi belsőségeket ábrázoló munkái kerültek a tematikus kiállítóhely állandó showjába.

A kiállítást mögnyitom.

ORGAN CONCERT[1] by Beáta Szabó
Liget Gallery, 6 September 2018.

Reinterpreting Courbet’s scandalous painting L’Origine du monde, Beáta Szabó gave voice to her critical thoughts. Instead of enumerating the differences between Szabó’s and Courbet’s paintings, let us content with that that Szabó increased the original size by four times. Nevertheless she kept the substantial similarity, so much so that one can recognize the original in Szabó’s painting even from afar as well as the fact that it is meant to be a paraphrase. This representation of a female torso – since the body becomes a torso in Szabó’s interpretation – points towards an even truer origin uncovering and showing the internal reproductive organs. Allegoric and realist, Courbet’s painting venerated the femininity as imagined in the 19th century. In contrast, Beáta Szabó went deeper (also literally), her way of revisitation making us wonder why she felt the need to do so. By her act, the artist demolished the (noxious and existentially dangerous) myth of femininity while showing, no mercy, that the ovaries and the womb are paramount to procreation or, even more, these are the ones that count at all – contrary to the idolum of the covetable nude sleeping on white linens and asking for it.
The reason I started with highlighting a critical aspect of the works was to shed light on Beáta Szabó’s conscious and reflected self as a painter which is in sharp contrast with what her works would suggest at first glance – their picturesqueness, and the thick layers of paint forming relief textures as if the matter was kneaded like clay. Let me put it straight right away – pictorial sensuality and carnal exuberance are combined and operated with rational deliberation in these works. This is further supported by the titles and the artist’s statement (the Courbet reinterpretation is entitled Relation to the Origin No. 02 – 2018). The nature of this relation is unexpressed but the picture’s motif and the reference in the title clarify that this relation is the exact focus of Beáta Szabó’s examination, wanting to know her connection to Courbet’s L’Origine du monde, to the origin as such, and to the concept of origin (What does origin mean? What comes from this origin?). The Sketch to the relation No. 01-03 and the 3D sketch to the relation are sketches only in their titles – these are complete and finished works of art. In the third sketch an erected penis supersedes the vulva raising the question whether that can rather be the real origin. But no direct answer is offered in the revealed abdominal cavity/mass of paint in the background. Or is that the origin of war as Orlan stated in 1989?[2]
In her paintings of internal organs, the guts are coiling and writhing around (1277, 2017). The assumption that the artist is driven by mere anatomical curiosity is refuted by the picture juxtaposed, a diptych evoking a slaughterhouse. The uncomplicated silhouette and the stylized posture of the decapitated female figure upset and disturb the viewer who sees the bulging organs in the open chest and an embryo waiting for its birth (in vain) – these pieces of painted flesh remind us of a massacre rather than of a sectional view in an anatomy book. Szabó composed her self-portrait, the Organ portrait, of internal organs, just as 16th-century painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo composed his portraits of books, animals or vegetables. Tivadar Csontváry has a similar regard, full of attention, curiosity, and obsessively focused interest; Egon Schiele looks as tormented.
When looking for parallels focusing on Szabó’s style, all analogies I could come up with both within the history of art and within feminist art specifically (mainly from an iconographic point of view) were weak compared to Beáta Szabó’s brave, expressive, naturalist pasty paintings. They were too abstract, stylized, or genteel.[3] Only Katarzina Kozyra’s and Hannah Wilke’s sick photos are as cruel as Szabó’s works. This inevitably raises the question: Is there a connection?
What is really disturbing here is the virtual merging of flesh and paint, flesh and blood. Never disincarnate, idealized, nor spiritualized, the flesh becomes paint and the paint becomes flesh – it is a new way of painting flesh, not with body and light like Tibor Hajas did[4] but with oil. By means of representation, Szabó explores the expressive aesthetics of flesh and paint. Wounded bodies, magnified genitals, our submergence into paint and flesh – this is what punches us in the face. The gash, the pain(t) of the flesh strikes through. Wounding a person is humiliating them and that is why they really suffer. It is hard to tell more about this. And it seems whereof one cannot speak thereof one must be painting.
The pain of Geworfenheit, being thrown into existence, into female existence is what Beáta Szabó’s exhibition expresses. Where does the flesh end and the soul begin? Where is their demarcation? That is what she is asking in her pictures and also in her words.[5] And her answer is that they are not separated – the soul is in the body and the body is in the soul; the body lives by the soul and the soul is manifested through the body. “The God of the spirits of all flesh’ [Num 16:22] …this cosmic dualism is not to be confused with the anthropological dualism according to which man carries the sphere of spirit and the sphere of flesh within as two complementary substances” – warns us a biblical lexicon.
It is worth examining closely the color schemes of the works, more exactly the painting work in them as well as how two-dimensional and three-dimensional structures relate to each other – the challenge, curiosity and playfulness appearing when the flatness of the painting has to be exceeded and the achromatic sculpture proves insufficient thus the two techniques, picture and sculpture, flow and mix together.
Lastly, before being engulfed by the ocean of suffering we should also note a grotesque, almost mischievous voice that speaks from these works. Although the viewer gets strongly possessed by the works, due to the accurate enlargement of body parts in some works and to the indifference toward anatomical facts in others, one can also distance themselves, catch breath and laugh.

[1] The Hungarian title literally translates as “The Science of the Instruments of Life”. There is a pun in this exhibition title that promises an examination of the body as a life-supporting entity.

[2]On Orlan’s photograph entitled L'Origine de la Guerre there is a man with an erected penis. Her picture matches the size, composition and nearly every detail of Courbet’s painting.

[3] The following adjectives are valid only compared to the elemental effect of Beáta Szabó’s works (which is a product of the combination of her themes and her style) and cannot be considered a value judgment: Rembrandt’s Slaughtered Ox is objective; Chaïm Soutin’s is rather decorative. Francis Bacon is affected, Dubuffet is reductive, and there is a lack of depth at the artists of CoBrA (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn). There are many artists who apply thick paint in their pictures (for example the contemporary painters Levente Baranyai and József Baksai). The provoking effect of the works of Csaba Kis Róka, László Győrffy, and Gábor Szenteleki is also remarkable but they give the thrill by including uncanny or rational motifs and do not want to achieve the level of Szabó’s elemental directness. Women, some of them with a feminist agenda, have also represented the female genitalia and body but their works are stylized, symbolic or overaestheticized. Georgia O’Keeffe is symbolist, Judy Chicago stylized, Lynda Benglys and Alina Szapocznikow abstract, Orshi Drozdik’s Medical Venus and Louise Bourgeois’s sculptures are beautiful in the classical sense just as the sublime internal organs in Mária Chilf’s watercolor works. Nothing seems more direct or realist than photography, film (video) or performance art (putting theories aside, based on everyday practice). In the performances of Shigeko Kubota and Carolee Schneemann (1939) the concept (and the fact that it is done by women) proves more disturbing than what one can actually see. Valie Export whose performance (Genital Panic) was directly based on the display of genitalia is less ruthless than Szabó (or ruthless in another way). Although it is true that Hermann Nitsch’s Orgies Mysteries Theater is more disturbing because of the real bloodshed, I do not consider it a serious analogy due to my ethical concerns.
[4] In the 1970’s Hajas’s mono-performances were photographed by János Vető.

Szabó Beáta: ÉLETMŰSZERÉSZET[1]
Liget Galéria 2018. szeptember 6.

Amikor Szabó Beáta újraértelmezi Courbet botrányosnak ítélt A világ eredete című képét, akkor kritikai gondolatainak ad hangot.
A Vázlat a viszonyhoz I-III.
A belső szerveket mutató festményén tekeregnek, vonaglanak a zsigerek (1277, 2017). Hogy csupán anatómiai érdeklődés vezérelné a művészt, arra rácáfol a mellette levő kép: a mészárszéket idéző diptichon. A dekapitált női alak végtelenül egyszerű körvonala, stilizált póza (Nőstény I-II.) felzaklat, felkavar, mivel a felnyitott mellkasából előtüremkednek szervei, hasában a születésre (hiába) váró magzat – mészárlást idéznek a megfestett húsok inkább, mint anatómiai metszet-rajzot. Önarcképét, a Szervportrét szervekből állította össze a művész, mint Giuseppe Arcimboldo, aki a 16. században könyvekből, állatokból vagy zöldségekből komponálta arcképeit. Csontváry Tivadar néz ilyen figyelmesen, kíváncsian, feladatra koncentráló megszállott érdeklődéssel és Egon Schiele ilyen meggyötört.
Amikor analógiákat kerestem, minden ami eszembe jutott, akár a klasszikus művészettörténet vérvonalán (többnyire a stílust tartva szem előtt), akár a feminista művészetben (inkább ikonográfiai szempontból) gyenge analógiának bizonyult Szabó Beáta bátor, expresszív, naturalista pasztózus festészetéhez.
A hús sebe, fájdalma átüt.

Képe a Courbet-festménnyel méretben, kompozícióban és szinte minden részletében megegyezik.

[3] A jelzők csak Szabó Beáta műveinek elementáris hatásához képest (amit motívumainak és stílusának összekapcsolása eredményez) érvényesek, nem értékítéletek: Rembrandt Mészárszéke tárgyilagos, Chaïm Soutiné dekoratív. Francis Bacon szenveleg, Dubuffet redukál, a CoBrA alkotóinál (Karel Appel, Asger Jorn) hiányzik a mélység. Valie Export, akinek performansza (Genital Panic) direkt a nemi szerv megmutatásán alapult, sem olyan kíméletlen (ill. másképp). Hermann Nitsch Orgia-misztérium-színházát, amely ugyan felkavaróbb – valóban vér folyt, etikai fenntartásaim miatt nem gondolom komoly analógiának.

Opening remarks by Ildikó Horányi art historian, senior museologist:

Dear Visitors,

Researching and exploring the human body has always been a fundamental mission of medicine and it still is today. But it only got priority and transcended mere internal medicinal and surgical diagnostics in the era of humanism when it started to aspire to grasp the normal and define ideal values on the basis of the divergent specific metrics, placing the man in the center of the universe as a superior and divine creature with that act. The man, treated as a unity of body, soul and intellect, was exalted, being created in the image of the Supreme Creator and also carrying the capacity to create. The entities of life and death cannot be understood one without the other independently thus the science of medicine is confronted with the fundamental ontological questions of existence hence it transfigures into an ancillary discipline to philosophy. No wonder that this period made fine art a partner of descriptive anatomy and their relationship was deeper than that one could see it as mere interest for illustration. In the anachronistic X-ray-like images of the living human body and the representations of cadavers loaded with memento mori iconography the artists were searching for the answers to the same questions as the anatomists. The several-century-long cooperation of art and medicine is not just a thing of the past – even today artists are displaying genuine interest for ideas related to the body, to corporeality, and to the matter decomposing into particles and reorganizing into shapes and forms again. Some artists create personal mythologies as did László Győrffy in our previous exhibition; others follow a more universal approach paired with a peculiar attitude like Beáta Szabó.

Beáta is an intellectual artist who, in a public autopsy of herself, lays her inner torments before us, which, like Saint Bartholomew’s flayed skin, are wounds torn into the flesh of the cosmos. Her extremely impulsive and expressive creating process brings an extravaganza of colors and factures under control to form shapes and to herd them together into a single organic unit. The intricate web of relations between visual components is in constant cyclic restructuring tamed into a compositional integrity under the yoke of the creator’s will. The violation of the body’s integrity induces overcharged tension where the part is embedded in the whole and the whole is embedded in the part in an impersonal and faceless manner, together outlining the intended conceptual structure. The works don’t tolerate limits; they break out of the plane and not only by the turbulent painting method and the playfulness of the facture but also by adapting the material substratum of the canvas to the purpose in a way that it transforms into a body itself. This exhibition even goes beyond traditional installation, adjusting the placement of the paintings to the permanent show to create exciting spatial constellations. They became part of the exhibit, complement the objects in space and with new ideas, respond to them while some others claim to be works in their own right. These are the artistic tools that serve and express Szabó’s system of thoughts originating from the creative force of the body striving to break free from itself and the swirling dynamism inside searching its way out. Just as the mother protectively embraces the child just ripped out of her weakened, tortured, almost dead or dead body after giving birth, so does our shell harbor everything what is human, fallible, and what transcends our existence in the circle of life. Despite the constant battle fought between the obedient and vulnerable body conceived in the original sin, the burden or lightness of our physical existence, and the nobility of the soul, they all stand in balance. By the imprint of the transilluminated living body, the Danse Macabre of modern science, one can directly encounter their own posthumous figure in their life. The shadow of the living flesh represents the stage when existence will be shedding off of non-existence. Under the flesh that dissolves in the light and appears in an elemental contrast against the frame, the Omnilucent X-ray is searching and fumbling for an essence and the contours of the skeleton promise to offer more than just the tangible material nature of the bones. The presence seizable in its corporeality consubstantial with the timelessness rising from the circle of life is searching for its own meaning – perhaps the embodied Word. Everyone should seek the answer within themselves! So becomes the penetration of the body or the invasive intervention a dissection or rather an artistic vivisection of these existential questions.

I hereby declare the exhibition Invasive by Beáta Szabó officially open.

Horányi Ildikó  művészettörténész, főmuzeológus megnyitó beszéde:

Tisztelt Megjelentek!

A test, lélek, szellem egységében kezelt ember a világmindenség kozmikus rendjében a legfőbb teremtő képmásaként magasztosul fel, mindazonáltal magában hordozza a teremtés képességét is.

A hús élő szövetének árnyéka a nemlét létről lefoszló állomása. A fényben oldódó, a váztól mégis elemi erővel elkülönülő hús alatt a mindenséget átvilágító röntgensugár valahol a lényeget keresi, kutatja, a csontok felsejlő sziluettje mindenesetre többet ígér azok tapintható, materiális lényegénél. A testiségben megmarkolható jelen, az élet körforgásából kibomló időtlenség önmaga értelmét kutatja – talán a megtestesülő Igét. A választ mindenki önmagában keresse! A testbe való behatolás, invazív beavatkozás ezáltal válik a művész kezében a lét kérdéseinek boncolatává, művészi viviszekciójává.

Szabó Beáta Invazív című kiállítását ezennel megnyitom…

Opening remarks by Mesi Mucsi curator, art writer (ArtMagazin):

I wonder how many of you might have seen Restoration, a movie set in the 17th century, and that scene in this movie in which Robert Merivel, a talented young medic played by Robert Downey Jr., and his fellows were observing the chest of a seriously ill man sitting on a chair in front of them. Due to an infection after an accident, this mans flesh sloughed off on a patch, slightly to the right of his left nipple, where his ribs were also missing providing free insight for the gleaming eyes of Merivel and his company onto the patients beating heart in the ribcage. Their staring was soon followed by acts. Amongst those present, only Merivel dared to touch the organ throbbing in the living body.

This is the peak moment of the story it was by this act that the main character of Merivel managed to gain the recognition of King Charles II prompting the monarch to invite him to his court in London. However, we will consider it important for other reasons; namely, because we can observe a sort of the genuine curiosity in this episode.

Szabós paintings showing internal organs, lungs, hearts, and dissected bodies could just as well be exhibited in a neutral environment destined for displaying contemporary artworks. In that case, our first thoughts might turn to the discipline of anatomy which is the cornerstone of art studies and the well-known book of Artistic Anatomy by Jenő Barcsay; then we could ponder over the complicated relationship of the exhibited paintings with them. We could think about the fact that this revered Anatomy Bibleof Barcsay interprets the human body quite differently from medical handbooks when it analyzes the connections of the joints with the help of geometric shapes to find structures beyond appearance.[1] Going forward on this way, we could compare Beáta Szabós works to the medical and artistic anatomy representations to see how much and for what purpose she deviated from them. By examining her pictorial solutions, we would soon arrive at the apt parallel of expressionism, the movement that represented reality in an emotional way projecting the subjective truth onto the world of objects. We could also refer to Emil Noldes idea about the colors being living creatures, the kinds that are able to influence and express human emotions. The multiple layers and the contours would instantly remind us of the oeuvre of Edward Munch, and at this point, we would shortly learn that the bodies explored, the lung, the heart on the images were painted with no intermediate utensils but by Beáta Szabós pure hands, applying thick batches of paint onto the canvas. We could even imagine the moment her fingers were touching the heart we can see now.

But we are in the Semmelweis Medical History Museum, where all these things will come only after that we have wondered what the nature of this genuine curiosity is that we see highlighted by this special place and which has apparently also impregnated the mind of the creator of these works. Since it is missing from the official biography, only few people know that prior to her artistic studies, Beáta Szabó had been a medical student for some time; hence she shows a two-fold interest in anatomy. This double motivation of hers is further complemented by a general curiosity aiming to fathom what happens to our body and its contents after the death. Far from being the product of our modern times, this kind of fascination with the death of the body transcends historical ages. The anatomy theaters that opened in many cities with medical faculties starting from the 16th century constitute a great proof of this original human interest. Beside those pursuing a medical career, the several-day-long performances of these theaters would also be attended by the intellectual elite of the city as well as by the commoners of the area.[2] The autopsy of the normally male or, in rare cases, female body spread on the dissection table was accompanied not only by the doctors educational lecture but also by instrumental music. For the admission fee, the audience could gain insight into the hidden secrets of nature.[3] This kind of artistic-medical performance thrived until the middle of the 18th century when medical anatomy parched into an arid science leaving the moral lessons to the arts.[4]

The scene of Merivel was set in a similar environment, and we are also in a situation that somehow resembles these anatomy theaters. We evoked the hand gesture touching the heart twice firstly recalling a scene in a fictional movie, secondly by making an imaginary visit to Beáta Szabós studio. Both acts stemmed from the same kind of genuine curiosity but have different meanings. While Robert Merivels move can be interpreted as a metaphor of scientific progress, standing amidst Beáta Szabós work, we can recognize another attitude which is specific to her, mixing medical knowledge and physiological interest to creative motivations.

Mucsi Emese kurátor, művészeti író (Artmagazin) megnyitó beszéde:

Talán többen vannak itt, akik látták a 17. századi környezetben játszódó Változások kora című filmet és benne azt a jelenetet, amikor a Robert Downey Jr. által játszott fiatal, tehetséges orvostanhallgató, Robert Merivel társaival együtt egy széken ülő, nagybeteg férfi sérült mellkasát nézi. A férfi bal mellbimbójától kicsivel jobbra egy baleset utáni fertőzés következtében lebomlott a hús, alatta lévő bordái hiányoztak, így feltárulhatott az a látvány, amire Merivelék csillogó szemmel meredtek: a beteg bordakosarában lüktető szíve. A bámulást tettek követték.

Ott valószínűleg rögtön a művészeti képzés egyik alappillérét jelentő anatómia tantárgy, a Barcsay Jenő-féle Művészeti anatómia könyv és a kiállított festmények mindezekhez fűződő viszonya felé terelődnének elsőként a gondolataink.
